VINTAGE English Habit
This beautiful, hard-wearing habit was tailor-made in London.
Expertly constructed in a substantial, heavy cloth, she features a well-weighted apron that drapes exactly as it should. Cut to perfection, the quality of her tailoring is evident in every line and detail.
She began her story in England before later being brought to Australia, where she has continued to be worn and cherished. Carrying with her a rich sense of history and timeless elegance, her previous owner even wore her in Queensland despite the heat, a reflection of her deep appreciation for English tradition.
She was noted to be a UK/AU size 12/14 - however, we suggest this be considered a “vintage 12/14,” as sizing from this era typically runs smaller than modern measurements.
The jacket features a buttoned collar option to fold up in colder weather - a detail we absolutely love! The apron also features pockets - a rare and practical addition!
Please note: all measurements are approximate and taken as accurately as possible.
JACKET MEASUREMENTS (FRANK HALL labelled)
• Shoulders (seam to seam): 15 inches
• Length (collar folded down): 26 inches
• Armpit to armpit: 18 inches
• Sleeve length: 24 inches
APRON MEASUREMENTS
• Waist (opened up): 32 inches
• There is additional room to add another run of buttons to increase width (see photo)
• Wrap around (left side to back): 11 inches
• Waist to hem (apron drop): 27 inches
• Waist to knee: 17.5 inches
• Knee to hem: 21 inches
The jacket remains in excellent condition; however, the lining, quite typical for a garment of this age has seen better days, with some minor tears and staining. It remains fully functional and is not visible when worn. For those who wish, a new lining could be added.
The hook from the discreet hook-and-eye closure has been lost, though this is a simple replacement (see photo)
The apron is in very good condition overall; however, it does present with a tiny hole, along with another very small hole at a seam/dart on the outer (see photos). There are also a few minor stitching repairs to the exterior and some light wear along the edging etc.
As expected with a well-used apron, wear from contact with breeches, saddles, and the horse is evident, forming part of her authentic character and well-wearing fabric/material!
Internally, there are a few small areas that would benefit from light re-stitching. The elastic remains functional, though it has softened with time; replacement may be considered at the purchaser’s discretion.

The habit has been dry cleaned; however, it has been stored in its bag for some time since, so an additional clean would not go astray.
From a home with cats, dogs, and horses, a few stray hairs may still be present.
She has truly stood the test of time and remains a wonderfully hard-wearing piece. In light of her minor imperfections - remarkable considering her age, the price has been thoughtfully set to reflect this, with the hope that she will continue to be worn, loved, and enjoyed by her next custodian.
